Bordeaux wine is known and loved worldwide, boosting France’s image and that of its culture and gastronomy, both key aspects of its identity. Synonymous with quality, refinement and luxury, France’s 2,000-year old practice of viticulture has encountered twists and turns over the centuries, in particular during the Middle Ages, when the Aquitaine region was ruled by the English. These overseas connoisseurs particularly appreciated claret, and they contributed greatly to the economic development of Bordeaux’s vineyards.
