Her childhood and apprenticeship (in wax modeling) took place in Paris against the backdrop of the French Revolution, an extremely turbulent period to which she bore witness. At the age of 40, however, fueled by a fierce ambition to succeed, she left everything behind her and departed for England. There she travelled from town to town, fine-tuning her artistry, becoming a shrewd and modern businesswoman, and finding the celebrity for which she is now known.
